Last week we presented on social media to Fernando M. Cimadevila, the creator of our Mythical Beings Board Game, and we decided to give him a brief interview so you can get to know him better.
How was the process to create the board game based on the Mythical Beings cards? Did you create the game at the same time as the cards or did it come later?
The process was somewhat complex since I am used to creating the game from an idea and gradually adding what I need and removing the excess. However, in this case, the cards were already created and I had to stick with them. So, had a series of restrictions and limits.
What are the most important elements you should consider when creating a board game?
The most important thing is the choice of mechanics and how they are linked. Creating a game is like composing a song. There are a limited number of mechanics, in the same way that there are a limited number of notes, and it all depends on how they are arranged, both in order and in duration, that you will get a result or other.
What are the keys for a board game to be entertaining and engaging?
The primary key is perhaps the experience when creating games and playing them. We should not think of board games as a single, reduced whole. Board games such as cinema, literature, or music, encompass a wide range of styles, genres, and themes… so, what is entertaining for one type of player is extremely boring for others. The question is to have experience and know what audience the game is aimed at in order to satisfy their tastes.
What was your experience funding the game on Kickstarter? Do you think it is a good platform to launch projects?
I think it is perhaps one of the best options if the idea is to launch a game worldwide and in several languages. However, to launch it in a single country it would be preferable to use another more local and local platform.
How do you see the future of board games?
Board games have grown exponentially in the last 20 years. I think they are here to stay and definitely become an option for entertainment and socialization that is totally widespread and integrated into society.
